Technology is seeping into every facet of our modern world from the way we write to the way we communicate. Now, even the kitchen is no longer an exception. From electric stoves to smart ovens to scales linked to your internet connection, this trend shouldn’t be surprising at this point. Likewise, in any kitchen, a tablet can be used for so much more than just simply entertaining your cooking session with a good e-book, movie or song.

They can be your best cooking companion if used right. You just have to think a bit creatively. For instance, not only can you use them to display the recipe you’re following but you can even convert measurements on-the-go with the push of a button or through a voice command!

You can even host a video call with a cooking instructor to get a few pointers if that’s what you’re looking for or, if you’re feeling a bit lazy, turn on a good follow-along cooking show.

Even for the more diet-conscious, you can turn your tablet into a meal planner and for the more sentimental, take photos and videos of your homemade mouth-watering meals.

Of course, tablets, in general, aren’t necessarily designed for specific use in the kitchen so you’ll have to pick something that accounts for functionality yet can withstand the rough environment of a kitchen. Finding such a niche yet appropriate device can be overwhelming for just about anyone but don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

Check out our list below for some of the best tablets for kitchen use.

1. Amazon Fire HD 10

The Fire HD 10 by Amazon would make a fantastic addition to any kitchen, especially if you’re looking for a great value between price and function. Coming with a decently sized screen and solid processing power if used beyond the kitchen, the Fire HD 10 could be the perfect sous chef you’ve always been looking for.

The highlight of the Fire HD 10 is its mesmerizing 10.1-inch display with a respectable native resolution of 1920 x 1200. This easily allows any user to view from most angles, even the most intricate details on videos and images. Performance-wise, coming in both 32GB and 64GB options, the tablet is kitted out with a solid Quad-core 1.3GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM.

This isn’t exactly spectacular by anybody’s metric, but it will be more than adequate to do the job for anything in and beyond your kitchen. So, whether you’re blogging about your sourdough baking journey, watching Buzzfeed’s Tasty recipes or playing Cooking Mama while waiting for your steaks to marinate, the Fire HD 10 will be just right for you.

An even bigger reason why you should pick the Fire HD 10 is because of Alexa. With just the command of your voice, Alexa will be able to do a whole range of tasks like keeping timers, converting units, listing recipe ideas and even controlling kitchen appliances (if you have smart devices)! Surely to any home cook, the value of not needing to take a hand away from the stove needs no further explanation.

Do note however that the catch with Amazon products is that they are linked to Amazon’s store. This means no Google Play downloads so your choice of applications will be more limited.

2. Apple iPad 128GB (10.2-Inch)

Now before you jump out at us and mention how an Apple iPad would be overkill for a kitchen tablet, hear us out for a second. We’re not talking about the iPad Pro or anything along those lines – we’re just referring to the basic iPad. We truly believe that if you can swallow its steep price point, it absolutely will work great for just about anyone.

Not only is this product sleek and beautiful, but this tablet will also do just about anything you require both within and beyond the kitchen. From pulling up recipes to using Siri to search for answers to your urgently pressing questions, the iPad will be able to do all of this without a single hitch.

Even beyond the kitchen, it will be more than able to be used for simple tasks like web browsing to more demanding tasks like video editing given its A10 processor and 3GB of RAM. Further, with its storage capacity capping out at 128GB, you can rest assured that the number of recipes and videos you can store in this will effortlessly number in the thousands.

Now while the 10.2-inch retina display will be a feast for the eyes, there is one catch. The iPad is definitely not a very durable tablet on its own. Not only is it not waterproof, but it is also easily scratched and dented. So, before you take the plunge on the iPad, make sure you don’t have butterfingers and consider investing in a separate protective case!

3. Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e 128GB Wi-Fi Tablet Black

After having mentioned Apple’s iPad, it would be criminal not to mention its biggest contender: Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S5e – Samsung’s best response to Apple.

The S5e’s native resolution of 2560 x 1600 is densely packed into the 10.5-ich AMOLED display which offers a viewing experience that is just as mindboggling as anything Apple can offer. Even looking inwards at performance, with a storage of 128GB couple with a Qualcomm CPU, it is one of the most powerful tablets out there in the market.

Whether you want to max-out your gaming experience, stream some Netflix while cooking or view the finest details on a loaf of bread, the S5e will do all without breaking a sweat.

Also, while not quite Google Home, Google Assistant can be considered plus as some reports indicate how it has a faster response time compared to Siri and Alexa. And much like Alexa, Google Assistant can help you go through recipes from step to step with just the command of your voice (something Siri is unable to do as of now).

Nevertheless, Samsung’s S5e suffers from the same flaw as other Android Tablets. You’re once again locked to Amazon’s app store so your choices of the software will be more limited – just do your homework before purchasing and you’ll do just fine.

4. 10″ Android Tablet with Counter/Cabinet Stand by Key Ingredient

Now if you’re not looking to spend a large sum for a versatile product that can be used seamlessly from kitchen to the outside world, consider getting Key Ingredient’s 10-inch Android Tablet.

While its display and weight don’t come close to holding a candle to the iPad or Fire HD 10, what you sacrifice in functionality you gain in price. This product is the cheapest in our list and would be the ideal choice for anyone solely looking for a budget tablet meant just and only just for the kitchen.

Likewise, because what you pay is what you get, you’ll find that the tablet’s processing power is mediocre at best. With 2GB of RAM and a paltry 2GHz processor, you’re not going to find much utility beyond kitchen recipes and videos but if that’s what you’re going for then you’ve found your match.

Among all the tablets on our list, this tablet perhaps is the only tablet built with kitchen-use in mind. It is very durable – with a design that specifically considers the hazardous environments of kitchens, spills, and splashes are no longer a worry given the waterproof design of the product.

A further highlight of the tablet is in the complementary stand that comes along with its purchase which allows you to mount the tablet practically anywhere in your kitchen. Whether you want to place it on your wall or cabinet or somewhere else, it will provide the ideal nest for your tablet.

5. Amazon Fire HD 8 (16GB)

If your kitchen is small and space is a rare scarcity, then you should consider getting a less sizeable tablet. This is where Amazon Fire HD 8 steps in with a compact, yet crisp display through its native 1024 x 600 resolution and screen size of 8-inches.

Not too small yet not too big, it would work just right for any kitchen and especially, would be a good addition for more space-restricted homes.

Like the Fire HD 10, this device also packs a solid punch in terms of performance with its 1.3 GHz quadcore and 1GB of RAM. It similarly won’t excel in terms of high-end and more demanding processes but will be more than a brick if used for non-cooking related tasks.

The only downside, however, is its battery which when tested, only lasted 7 hours when compared to the 10+ hours of the Fire HD 10 and its much slower charging-up speed due to its Type-A USB port.

Three Things to Look For in a ‘Kitchen Tablet’

Durability

The kitchen is no place for the meek. With blazing fires, dirty fingers and splashes of oil and water being commonplace, it goes without saying that a tablet should be more than able to handle some rough care if it were to survive this environment. Devices made out of sturdy materials with minimal plastic and flex would be ideal for the kitchen.

Additionally, you can’t go wrong by purchasing a separate protective case but at the end of the day, the degree of protection your tablet needs will depend heavily on how you, as a chef, operate in the kitchen. Look carefully towards yourself and be honest with how clumsy or rough you are when cooking!

Performance

When it comes to tablets destined for just kitchen use, you most certainly do not need to find the fastest, meanest device out there. After all, you’re just reading a recipe or following along a video, not editing some hour-long 4K video on Final Cut Pro!

Your attention instead should be placed on finding something decent and has good enough storage so anything with at least 32GB of storage and 1GB of RAM should be adequate enough for the kitchen.

Battery

Nowhere is a tablet with a solid battery life more essential than in the kitchen. Imagine yourself cooking up the most lavish and complex meal ever, then suddenly click – your tablet goes dead. Lost, confused, you’ll probably run to the nearest power socket to boot up your tablet but by the time it comes back on, your recipe is ruined.

Now while this is tragic, unless you’re planning to use your tablet for a 10-hour long meal prep session you shouldn’t worry too much so long as you pick a decent tablet. Everything on our list will last for at least 6-hours but if you find your needs to be more demanding, we suggest you look elsewhere.
