While Apple's iPad Air 2 has rightfully received a great deal of attention, the iPad Mini 3 seems like an afterthought by comparison. Given the relative lack of upgrades, it isn't hard to see why. Rather than the handful of small but significant updates made to the iPad Air, the newest iPad Mini is left largely unchanged. The form factor is exactly the same down to the millimeter. The slightly curved back and chamfered edges, while distinctly premium-feeling, are also identical to the previous iteration. In fact, without powering up the Mini it's hard to tell that anything has changed.

That's not to say there are no improvements, however. Touch ID will undoubtedly be the main selling point, and it works just as well as advertised. The display's specifications have not changed, but it does seem to offer better color accuracy and slightly improved overall image quality. There's also a 128-gigabyte version available, which should be popular for a device with no storage upgrade options. Finally, the Mini 3 can be had in Apple's new champagne gold color option. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other improvement worth noting. The Mini still employs the same modest A7 chipset, which leaves it lagging behind several competitors in terms of performance. The Apple iPad Mini 3 is certainly a good tablet in its own right, but the improvements on offer are so slight as to make the new release almost redundant.
